Marc Stein’s latest report includes an intriguing detail regarding Walker Kessler’s trade market.
According to Stein, both the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers aggressively pursued Kessler before the trade deadline. While it’s always fascinating to get insight into deals that never materialized, this particular trade seemed unlikely to happen—at least during the season.
One key factor was the Lakers’ acquisition of Luka Dončić, which likely made a Kessler trade to L.A. even more improbable. Utah also holds the Lakers’ 2027 first-round pick, meaning they have little incentive to help improve Los Angeles’ roster. However, the Knicks’ continued interest is noteworthy, raising the question of what they might be offering. Given how much they already sent to Brooklyn for Mikal Bridges, their assets for another major trade seem limited.
The most striking detail in the report is the emphasis on an “in-season” trade. Was Utah’s reluctance primarily due to the timing? Could a deal be more feasible this offseason? Time will tell, but one thing is certain—Kessler has plenty of suitors.

Trey Jemison III has played for four NBA teams in his very short career, and nothing compares to his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. Jemison described the Lakers as an exceptional organization, and he has enjoyed his time with them more than any of his prior three clubs

The draw of playing for the Lakers with their rich history is strong enough, but Jemison’s words make them an even more appealing landing site. They’ve long had a reputation for taking excellent care of their stars, but it appears that attention extends to peripheral rotation players as well.
On Jan. 15, 2025, the Lakers signed Jemison to a two-way contract, and his favorable remarks about the franchise are a terrific look for the team. The top brass has received a lot of criticism in recent years for one reason or another, and they deserve a pat on the back when they accomplish something correctly.
Jemison’s signing was also a solid decision. The 25-year-old is a member of the Lakers’ solid reserve unit, and after the 106-102 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, he discussed the bench’s identity.
“If you want this win, you have to come fight us,” Jemison remarked. “Literally fight us.”
Jemison played a season-high 22 minutes against the Clippers, totaling five points (2-3 FG), six rebounds, and one block. Due to Anthony Davis’s injury and departure, the Lakers rely on him to step up on occasion, and he’s done a good job thus far.
Jemison, who went undrafted in 2023, will be hoping that his performance impresses the Lakers enough that they decide to keep him around for a while. As previously said, the big man has changed teams several times, having played for the Washington Wizards, Memphis Grizzlies, and New Orleans Pelicans. He would like a permanent home, and there is no better place to be than with the Lakers.
The Lakers are also getting rewarded on the court for providing such excellent care to their players. The club is presently on a five-game winning run and has a fantastic 37-21 record this season.

Balancing the challenge of regaining form while adapting to a new system isn’t easy, but Doncic’s aggressive approach is a positive sign. After the Lakers’ 106-102 victory, the 26-year-old acknowledged the team’s strong chemistry and shared that he’s gradually feeling more like himself without disrupting their cohesion.
“The first thing I noticed was how connected they play on both ends of the floor,” Doncic said. “The ball moves well, and that stood out to me right away. I’m just trying to fit into a different style of basketball than I’m used to. But since returning, they’ve let me play my game. I still have a long way to go, but slowly, I’m starting to feel like myself.”
His late-game three-pointers, a signature part of his game, were a result of a more assertive mindset.
“I think the key was not waiting—just going for it,” Doncic said. “That’s what helped me in the fourth quarter.”
Through seven games with the Lakers, Doncic is averaging 21 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 6.4 assists while shooting 37.3% from the field and 24.1% from beyond the arc. Fans are eagerly awaiting a signature performance, but despite his adjustment period, the Lakers continue to find ways to win.

Reaves, who is averaging 19.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists this season, is not expected to miss significant time. However, sports injury expert Dr. Evan Jeffries believes he could be sidelined for several days or up to a week as a precaution.

The Lakers have taken a cautious approach to injuries in the past, so Reaves could miss a couple of games to ensure a full recovery. Earlier this season, he was sidelined for five games in December with a left pelvic contusion, though this absence is expected to be shorter.

Lucas has been at Duke the last three seasons, and prior to that spent two years under John Calipari at Kentucky. He also spent seven years at Texas, working his way from Director of Basketball Operations to assistant coach.
The hiring has not been finalized, with recent reports saying the two sides are still negotiating. Start date is among the issues being discussed, as Miami certainly wants a coach in place prior to March 24 when the transfer portal opens, while Duke could conceivably still be playing into April if they make the Final Four.
