Milwaukee Bucks’ Big Man Emerging as Next Center for Lakers Who Make it Known How Badly They Need a No. 5

Could Brook Lopez Be the Missing Piece for the Lakers? Veteran Center Emerges as Top Target in Offseason Big Man Hunt

The Los Angeles Lakers’ abrupt first-round playoff exit has left fans and analysts alike pointing to one glaring weakness: the absence of a true center. Now, eyes are turning toward Milwaukee Bucks veteran Brook Lopez — a familiar face in Los Angeles — as the potential solution.

“Splash Mountain” Back in Purple and Gold?
Lopez, who played for the Lakers during the 2017–2018 season, is once again on their radar as the team scrambles to address its frontcourt needs. After being rendered ineffective in the Bucks’ series loss to the Indiana Pacers, as well as during the final stretch of the regular season, Lopez enters unrestricted free agency at a crucial time — not just for himself, but for the Lakers, who are in desperate need of a defensive anchor.

The Lakers’ postseason struggles were epitomized by their inability to slow down Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert, who steamrolled the Lakers in Game 5 with a monster performance of 27 points and 24 rebounds. The Lakers had no answer in the paint — a problem only magnified by the midseason trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas in exchange for Luka Dončić. While Dončić brings elite offensive talent, his arrival left a gaping hole in the interior defense.

“No Comment,” LeBron Says — But Everyone Knows the Truth
When asked about the team’s need for a center, LeBron James responded with a knowing smile:

“No comment,” he said. “My guy AD said what he needed and then he was gone the following week, so I got no comment.”

It’s clear the locker room understands what’s missing — and what’s needed if the Lakers want to make another championship push in what could be the twilight of LeBron’s legendary career.

Lakers Lead the Odds to Land Lopez
According to betting odds and insider reports, the Lakers are currently the top favorites to sign Lopez this offseason. But they’re not the only ones in the hunt. The Brooklyn Nets — Lopez’s original NBA team — and the Atlanta Hawks have also shown interest. The Lakers’ other rumored options include Nic Claxton (Nets) and Clint Capela (Hawks), but Lopez stands out due to his experience, shot-blocking presence, and ability to stretch the floor with his three-point shooting.

What Lopez Brings
At 36, Brook Lopez still has plenty left in the tank. Despite a quiet end to his Bucks campaign, he averaged 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game this season, anchoring Milwaukee’s defense and providing valuable spacing on offense. His leadership and playoff experience would bring instant value to a Lakers squad that lacks size and veteran presence at the five.

The Bigger Picture: Lakers at a Crossroads
This offseason will be one of the most pivotal in recent Lakers history. With questions surrounding LeBron’s future and Luka Dončić eligible for a massive extension, the front office must act decisively to build a title-worthy roster. Fixing the glaring hole at center must be the first priority.

Brook Lopez may not be the long-term answer, but he could be the stopgap solution the Lakers need to get back on track — and maybe even back to the Finals.

The ball is now in GM Rob Pelinka’s court.

Will Splash Mountain ride again in L.A.?
