For Mark Pope, wearing “USA” across his chest isn’t just a coaching opportunity it’s a lifelong dream realized.

The Kentucky head coach is serving as an assistant for the USA Men’s U19 National Team, and as the squad works its way through training camp, Pope took a moment on Tuesday to express just how much this moment means to him.

“There’s nothing like USA Basketball,” Pope told KSR’s Jack Pilgrim. “I think wearing USA across your chest is a rare honor. It’s an incredible honor. Not only are you around the best players in the country, and hopefully the best players in the world, but also you’re representing this country.”

Pope has lived a basketball journey that stretches from coast to coast, and now, full circle to the national stage. Raised in Washington state, Pope began his playing career at the University of Washington before transferring to Kentucky, where he helped lead the Wildcats to a national championship in 1996.

From there, he went on to a six-year NBA career with the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Denver Nuggets, before pivoting to medical school at Columbia University. But basketball never left him. Pope ultimately traded scrubs for the sideline, launching a coaching career that has seen him zigzag across the country from Georgia to Utah, and now back to Lexington.

Now, he’s using all of that experience to help guide some of the best young talent in the nation.

Pope’s role with Team USA isn’t just a personal achievement—it’s also a unique opportunity to mentor two of his incoming Kentucky freshmen, Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno, both of whom were invited to the prestigious U19 training camp.

Johnson, a smooth-scoring combo guard and Kentucky native, survived the first round of roster cuts and remains in contention for the final 12-man team. Moreno, the 7-foot shot-blocking phenom, suffered a minor injury early in camp and has returned to Lexington to begin summer workouts and avoid further risk.

“It’s really special,” Pope said. “It’s an incredible opportunity to be a part of something that, once you get to kind of put your toe in here, it never leaves you.”

And Pope’s dedication shows whether he’s pushing Johnson to elevate his game at camp or preparing Moreno for the grind ahead in Lexington, he’s locked in. Representing the United States and Kentucky in the same breath is a rare alignment of passion and purpose.
