Before the Liverpool game, Manchester United players were texting in their WhatsApp group

Before their 7-0 loss to Liverpool, Manchester United players were texting about capturing the Premier League title in their WhatsApp group.

Erik ten Hag’s side were crushed by Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, effectively destroying any dim title ambitions.

That defeat not only dealt them a tremendous psychological blow, but it also dropped them 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal, despite the fact that they have a game in hand.

They will not win the Premier League this season.

Yet, according to a Daily Mail report, the players were beginning to believe.

The Red Devils were still in with a possibility of clinching the quadruple after winning the Carabao Cup last month.

They’ve advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals and are also in the Europa League last-16. Overtaking both Manchester City and Arsenal, though, was always going to be the most difficult hurdle to capturing all four titles.

Manchester United players believed they could win the Premier League.

The players, on the other hand, went into the Liverpool game still believing.

According to the Daily Mail: “Ten Hag was quick to put an end to any talk of quadruples, but there was a growing sense among the players that the Premier League crown was a genuine goal.

“The players had discussed the possibility of catching the top two on WhatsApp.

“The buildup to the Liverpool game was what made the fall so devastating.”

With such a disastrous loss, United may be looking ahead to ensure they finish in the top four. Tottenham trail them by four points, while Liverpool trail by seven. Newcastle may close the gap to five points with a game in hand.

What did Ten Hag have to say after Liverpool defeated Manchester United 7-0?
Ten Hag stated after the game that his team lost their heads during the game.

“It was a terribly awful performance, and it was the worst of the year,” Ten Hag stated.

“We lost the game at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, but you have to keep your head up, which we did not.

“It’s important about displaying discipline, which we didn’t do, so you start surrendering.

“It’s an extremely unprofessional and unnecessary performance. You’re supposed to do your job, and we didn’t.”

Can Manchester United recover?

On Thursday, United will look to rebound against Real Betis in the Europa League.

“We’ve made a lot of progress, but you see what happens when standards aren’t met,” Ten Hag remarked.

“I’ve said in the locker room that this is unacceptable. Yet, it is only one game.

“We shall recover. This team is capable of resetting and rebounding.”
