Rangers have successfully used cross-border compensation laws twice in recent seasons.
The Gers have swooped for Joe Aribo (Charlton Athletic) and Calvin Bassey (Leicester City) for minor amounts, much to the chagrin of their respective teams.
Cross-border rules allow teams to avoid paying high development fees if they can reach pre-contract agreements with players who play in separate countries.
After paying roughly £500k for the pair, Rangers made a combined £33 million by selling Joe Aribo to Southampton for £10 million and Calvin Bassey to Ajax for £19.6 million.
It’s a market that has worked brilliantly for Rangers before, and now one English side is reluctant to accept the possibility of the Ibrox club snagging a top
Rangers linked with Kwame Poku
Kwame Poku, a winger for Peterborough United, is in high demand following a standout season in the English League One.
Rangers News exclusively disclosed last week that Rangers scouts saw Poku score a sensational hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Cambridge United before the international break.
Rangers will face heavy competition to bring the 10-goal winger to Glasgow if they decide to make a move.
Rangers are boosted by the fact that, unlike their Premier League and Championship rivals, the Gers will not have to pay a large development fee for the 23-year-old player.
“They’ll look at the bids we’ve received. So we’ll be able to go into the tribunal right away and show them bids from six months ago for three-and-three, £3 million up front and £3 million in add-ons (a total of £6 million).
“We anticipate a minimum of plus, plus, plus, and plus.
“A fair tribunal will look at it and say, ‘Yeah, you’ve invested £500k, you’ve developed him,’ and the club attempting to sign him will look at it and say, ‘That’s a big club with money, you’re going to have to pay whatever.
“So that’s how they’d evaluate it.
“(The fact that we made him a hefty offer) also plays into it. We’d expect the tribunal to be very fair in not discouraging clubs from being in that scenario when richer clubs come in and demand a fair payment.”
Peterborough manager on Kwame Poku’s’safety net’
Now, Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has spoken out about the matter and, like his boss, has buried his head in the sand.
It comes as Sir Alex’s son suggests that Poku will stay in Peterborough in January, despite the fact that he will most certainly move next summer.
The Peterborough manager also indicated that an offer is on the table for Poku to stay at London Road.
“We have had speculation about our players throughout my time here,” Ferguson told Posh +.
“And I see that as a positive thing because if no one is talking about your players, it indicates you’re not doing well as a group.
“That conjecture will only intensify in January, and I will undoubtedly have to manage the issue involving certain players.
“I do not think anything will happen to Kwame (Poku). We have a safety net with him and Ricky (Jade Jones), since we will receive compensation for both of them given their ages.
“I never go crazy with acquisitions in January, but we will attempt to recruit one player in one position, and that will be contingent on one other factor.
“We offered exceptional financial offers to both of them.
