Luka Doncic Reflects on “Amazing” First Season with Lakers, Stays Quiet on Contract Talks
After a whirlwind debut season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic is finally taking a moment to breathe. While the Lakers’ playoff run ended sooner than fans hoped—with a tough first-round exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves—Doncic had nothing but praise for his experience in Los Angeles.
And while talk of a contract extension looms, Doncic is putting that on the backburner—for now.
“It’s Been Amazing”
Speaking after the Lakers’ Game 5 loss (96–103) at Crypto.com Arena, Doncic opened up about what his first few months in purple and gold have meant to him.
“It’s been great. The way the fans accepted me—it’s been amazing,” Doncic said. “The way the community accepted me has been amazing, too.”
The superstar guard was traded to the Lakers midseason in a blockbuster move that shook the NBA landscape. Despite the high expectations and pressure that come with playing in Los Angeles, Doncic appeared to thrive both on and off the court.
“I’m really glad I’m here,” he added. “I had a great couple of months. I’m still trying to learn about everything—the city, the team—just trying to process it all.”
Focused on the Court—Not the Contract
With the season now over, speculation is already swirling about Luka’s future. The 25-year-old becomes eligible for a massive contract extension on August 2, and fans and analysts alike are wondering whether he’ll commit long-term to L.A.
Doncic, however, isn’t ready to talk about it.
“I haven’t thought about it yet. I’ve been focused on basketball. Now is the time to think about everything,” he said.
His response suggests that, while he’s enjoyed his time in Los Angeles, he’s in no rush to make any big decisions.
A Promising Future, Despite a Disappointing End
Though the Lakers bowed out earlier than expected, Doncic’s impact was undeniable. In just a short time with the team, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game during the regular season, guiding the Lakers to a strong 50–32 finish—good enough for the 3rd seed in the Western Conference.
His chemistry with key players like Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves sparked hope for what’s to come, and his star power brought a renewed energy to Laker Nation.
While the early playoff exit stings, it’s clear the foundation is there for something bigger—if Doncic chooses to stay.
For now, though, the focus is rest, recovery, and reflection.
The summer will bring clarity. But if the first few months are any indication, Luka Doncic and the Lakers could be a force for years to come.
