CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Dean Smith Center had already been buzzing with excitement for the official start of North Carolina’s 2025–26 season, but just minutes before tipoff, the Tar Heels received an unexpected jolt of energy. Freshman guard Luka Bogavac was officially cleared to play — a development announced roughly 25 minutes beforethe ball went up in UNC’s opener against Central Arkansas. What followed was a debut performance that immediately turned heads.
In his first official game as a Tar Heel, Bogavac showcased the skill, poise, and versatility that made him one of Europe’s most intriguing young prospects. Despite entering the lineup on short notice, he looked completely at home in Carolina blue, contributing across every area of the floor in North Carolina’s dominant 94–54 victory.
The freshman guard finished with 10 points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals in just 20 minutes of action. But the stat line only tells part of the story.
From his first possession, Bogavac played with a confidence and composure well beyond his years. His sharp decision-making and unselfishness were immediately apparent — swinging passes into open space, setting up teammates for rhythm shots, and keeping the offense fluid and balanced. When the opportunity presented itself, he attacked decisively, using his size and control to finish at the rim or create open looks off the dribble.

Fans inside the arena couldn’t help but take notice. Each time Bogavac touched the ball, there was a murmur of anticipation — a sense that something exciting might happen. His first basket, a smooth transition pull-up from the wing, drew a roar from the student section. Moments later, he found a cutting teammate with a no-look bounce pass that drew just as much applause from the bench as it did from the crowd.
Defensively, Bogavac was just as engaged. His instincts and court awareness stood out — he jumped passing lanes, helped on rotations, and forced Central Arkansas into rushed decisions. His two steals both led directly to fast-break opportunities that fueled Carolina’s momentum during their early second-half surge.
Head coach Hubert Davis had hinted in recent weeks that Bogavac’s time would come soon, praising his work ethic and maturity during practice. Few, however, expected his debut to happen under such short notice — or to look this polished. “He’s been patient, he’s been focused, and he’s been ready,” Davis said postgame. “Tonight, he showed everyone what we’ve been seeing in practice. Luka plays the right way — he makes his teammates better.”
The Tar Heels didn’t need a hero in their blowout win, but Bogavac’s all-around play added a new dimension to their backcourt. His ability to operate as both a playmaker and scorer gives Davis flexibility in his guard rotation — and his defensive awareness fits perfectly into the team’s renewed commitment to toughness on both ends of the floor.
It was, by all accounts, a debut worth remembering. For a player who wasn’t even sure he’d be cleared to suit up until minutes before tipoff, Luka Bogavac made the most of every second. If this game was a preview of what’s to come, North Carolina fans have plenty to be excited about.
The season is just getting started, but in Chapel Hill, a new name has already started making noise — Luka Bogavac, the freshman who turned a last-minute clearance into a first impression no one will soon forget.
