Liverpool staff are encouraged by academy goalkeeper Harvey Davies’ progress

Davies has been a regular in the first-team set-up for some time, having appeared on last season’s pre-season tour to Asia. And now, according to The Athletic, he’s being considered as a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker.

Liverpool coaches are said to have ‘high hopes’ for both Davies and fellow academy goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga.

Given that current backup Caoimhin Kelleher is eager to spread his wings and leave Anfield this summer, both could be considered as potential replacements.

According to The Athletic, while both Davies and Pitaluga are highly regarded, they are viewed as ‘not ready’ to fill Kelleher’s shoes just yet.

Davies is looking for a chance at Liverpool.
Liverpool appears to have a large number of young goalkeepers on their books at the moment. In addition to Davies and Pitaluga, they have Jakub Ojrzynksi and Fabian Mrozek.

As a result, if Kelleher leaves the club this summer, there will be a few candidates from the younger age groups to replace him.

However, none of that quartet appears to be ready to step up just yet. Pitaluga and Ojrzynski have both played senior football on loan. But both were playing at a much lower level than Liverpool.

So, while it would be tempting to promote someone like Davies, it is clear that he would have to make significant progress very quickly.

To be fair to Harvey, he is making a good first impression. Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor described him as ‘outstanding’ on Twitter 18 months ago, and he has represented England at the youth level.

Perhaps in a year or two, the 19-year-old will be a genuine option for Jurgen Klopp. His focus should be on getting out on loan and getting minutes in the men’s game right now.

If he can’t do that, he should buckle down and train as hard as he can. Kelleher, who joined Liverpool as a 15-year-old, has never been away from the club. It is possible to enter the position after graduating from the academy.

A strong pre-season would be critical to this. If he can catch Jurgen’s attention long enough, he might start to feel better about letting Caoimhin go. Harvey has everything to play for, and he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
