Liverpool defender is set to miss time with an injury
Due to a hamstring injury suffered during the defeat at Brentford, Liverpool will be without Virgil van Dijk for a longer period of time than expected. According to reports, the situation is worse than anticipated
Van Dijk was substituted during the first half of the match at the Gtech Community Stadium. He was one of three players substituted, the others being Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas
It has since been revealed that the latter two were removed for tactical reasons. However, due to a hamstring injury, Van Dijk was replaced by Joel Matip
After the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insisted the problem was not serious. He claimed that the center-back was only removed as a precaution

“I don’t think it’s anything serious, but that’s why we switched him. We wanted fresh legs and different skill sets in the other two positions
However, according to The Times, Van Dijk will be out for longer than expected. The injury is worse than both the player and the medical staff anticipated, and he will be out for at least a few weeks
The Reds will be devastated by the news. Despite a slightly below-par season so far, Van Dijk remains their superior central defender
He could be forced to miss a string of games for Liverpool. On Saturday evening, Klopp’s side will face Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup
The following weekend, they travel to Brighton, who defeated Merseyside rivals Everton 4-1 on Tuesday. Chelsea visit Anfield on January 21, followed by a trip to Molineux and the second derby against Everton this season on February 13
Following his exploits at the World Cup, Ibrahima Konate returned to the Liverpool side at Brentford. Jamie Carragher claimed ahead of the match that he and Van Dijk were the Reds’ best center-back pairing
However, it appears that Klopp may be unable to field the duo at the same time while Van Dijk recovers from his injury. “I think that’s the future and I don’t think it’s the future, I think it’s the right now,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“That is Liverpool’s two best centre backs, I think he was very unfortunate not to play in the World Cup final. He was brilliant against Real Madrid in the Champions League final last season, and I believe Liverpool have a top player on their hands with him and Virgil van Dijk right now.”
