Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield this season, and one captain has emerged as a possible target
Liverpool have been linked with a midfielder who has won the Premier League this season.
The Reds said farewell to four players at Anfield on Saturday after drawing with Aston Villa, with Roberto Firmino capping off his final game in front of the Kop with a late equalizer. Aside from the forward who scored, three midfielders said their goodbyes to the crowd.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and James Milner are all on their way out, with Jurgen Klopp looking to bring in new faces in the middle of the park.
According to Football Fancast, Liverpool are interested in signing Turkish midfielder Orkun Kokcu, who recently led Feyenoord to their first title since 2017.
For coach Arne Slot, Kokcu has been a huge presence in the center, leading the team to a Europa Conference League final last season before going from strength to strength this season.
However, the 22-year-old has faced backlash in the past for her controversial decision not to wear a rainbow armband this season in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion.
“I stay close to my religion,” Kokcu said of his refusal to accept the gesture. “On the other hand, I understand the reactions from the outside.”
Liverpool is committed to inclusion, with captain Jordan Henderson and manager Jurgen Klopp both previously praised for their support of the LGBTQ+ community. Though Kokcu chose not to wear the armband, he stated that his decision was “purely personal.”
