Despite recent reports that there will be no defensive exits this summer, Liverpool is determined to sign a new center half
As the 2022-23 season came to a close, there was lots of speculation that Liverpool’s midfield overhaul would extend to the defense, with both Jol Matip and Joe Gomez rumored to leave in the summer.

That story has evolved in the last week. Matip is expected to stay at the club for the final year of his contract before leaving on a free transfer next summer, while Gomez will remain as a flexible homegrown depth option.
Despite this, a new center half is on the way. At least, that’s the tale according to club-connected David Lynch, who puts the Reds’ chances of signing a new positional player this summer at “100%.”

If Matip and Gomez are certain to stay for the upcoming season, the target profile may shift, allowing the club to pursue a player who is not expected to compete for a starting spot from day one.
That may mean that a player like Wolfsburg and Netherlands centre half Micky van de Ven, who is 22 years old, is even more enticing now for succession purposes, while a player like 27-year-old Benjamin Pavard is less appealing.
