What has happened with Liverpool’s pursuit of Gabri Veiga?
According to Spanish journalist Oscar Mendez, Liverpool are now the frontrunners in their pursuit of the Spaniard, despite competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United.

The Magpies were previously thought to be leading the race, with Marca (via the Express) claiming that Eddie Howe’s side were’very close’ to completing a deal, but Liverpool have now reclaimed the lead.

Veiga, who has a €40 million (£35 million) release clause, would be worth every penny as he completes an outstanding breakout season in LaLiga and looks every bit the future world-class star.

Gabri Veiga, how good is he?
Veiga, a creative and dynamic midfielder, has no reason not to emulate Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne’s all-encompassing, destructive role with the imperious Premier League champions.

There is a strong case to be made that the Belgian is the world’s leading midfielder, having won five Premier League titles and two FA Cup trophies since joining from Wolfsburg for £55 million in 2015, a move described as “remarkable” by manager Pep Guardiola.

De Bruyne has ten goals and 31 assists in 48 matches this season alone as the Citizens chase a historic treble, with only the Champions League final standing in the way.

The “amazing” Veiga, who differs from his distinguished peer by focusing more on his direct, progressive threat, still tantalises a career of great success as a playmaker with an innate eye for goal, as praised by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

According to FBref, the Vigo midfielder ranks among the top 1% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for non-penalty goals, the top 20% for assists, the top 12% for progressive carries, and the top 12% for successful take-ons per 90 over the past year.

Veiga has 11 goals and four assists from 40 matches across all competitions this season, including a match-winning brace against Barcelona on the final day of the league season, and the sky is truly the limit for this young “Spanish gem,” as lauded by Fabrizio Romano.

With Harvey Elliott’s five goals this season the most of any midfielder at Anfield, Veiga could emerge as one of the most devastating ‘gems’ in world football on Merseyside, despite still being in his early career.
