Liverpool are apparently keeping an eye on Levi Colwill’s position at Chelsea, as Brighton & Hove Albion are preparing a £40 million bid for the 20-year-old defender.

The Evening Standard reports that the Seagulls are preparing a club-record bid to capture the English star, who was chosen into Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions set-up this week following a fantastic year on loan in the Premier League with Brighton.

Colwill, described as ‘outstanding’ by former Huddersfield Town colleague Lewis O’Brien, is on his way to becoming one of the top prospects in England, and news of a £40 million bid from Brighton will be unpleasant at Anfield this week.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side are looking to bring in a young central defense this summer, and Colwill is perhaps the best prospect for the job given his form for Brighton last season and his homegrown credentials. Chelsea’s center-back is also a left-footer.

Indeed, a £40 million approach from Brighton may not be enough to overcome Chelsea’s determination. But such an offer will frighten Liverpool, who know they can’t afford to fall behind in the fight for Colwill this early in the summer transfer window.

Brighton has a serious chance of beating Liverpool at Colwill.

After spending a year on loan on the south coast, Brighton are the clear favourites to sign Colwill this summer, especially with the Seagulls set to compete in Europe next season as Chelsea prepare for another year of instability. And Liverpool may soon lose the race for the defender.

As previously reported, Brighton would provide Colwill with regular first-team action as well as minutes in the UEFA Europa League, implying that Liverpool may have few cards to play in their pursuit of the Chelsea midfielder this summer.
