Liverpool will be among the clubs interested in signing Kylian Mbappe if he departs PSG this summer.
Mbappe started another controversy in Paris Wednesday, notifying the club that he will not be activating a one-year contract extension. His contract has only 12 months left on it. PSG have allegedly placed him up for sale because they do not want him to depart on a free transfer in 2024.
And, according to the Spanish publication Marca, he may only join two teams.
The first is, unsurprisingly, Real Madrid. Mbappe joining Los Blancos has long seemed inevitable. They made an offer of roughly £146 million to sign him a year ago, and Marca believes that with one year left on his contract, he’d be cheaper than that.
The other, according to reports, is Liverpool. The Reds are thought to be a ‘strong possibility’ to sign Mbappe if PSG follows through on their vow to sell their top player. We’re at it again!
Mbappe begins yet another drama.
It’s amazing how Liverpool is always linked with a deal for Mbappe. At one point in the previous several years, the Reds were a possible destination for a man dubbed “the best player in the world” [CNN]. But they can’t now, as a Europa League team.
Due to financial constraints, Liverpool declined an expensive contract to recruit Jude Bellingham this summer. If they thought Jude was pricey, wait until they hear Mbappe’s salary in Paris.
So, without a doubt, money is the major reason Liverpool would not sign Kylian. However, there might be football-related factors as well.
Spending more than £100 million plus large salaries on Bellingham would have been challenging, but it would have made sense. Liverpool are in dire need of midfield reinforcements, and the 19-year-old is the best of his age. Targeting him was based on sound reasoning. Mbappe, on the other hand, is a different story.
Yes, the Frenchman is the club’s best attacker, but Liverpool already has top-tier alternatives in the left-sided position he prefers.
Signing Mbappe this summer was not in the Reds’ transfer plans, so bringing him in would just force Klopp to try to fit him into the lineup.
Of course, there are exceptions, and Mbappe is most likely one of them. His mother is a huge Liverpool supporter, and there’s just too much smoke in this one without a fire. Nonetheless, if that ever occurs, we’ll eat our hats.
