Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is also wanted by Arsenal

The Reds have had a disastrous season in Merseyside and look set to miss out on a place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2015/16 season.

The majority of Jurgen Klopp’s problems this season have been attributed to his midfield, which has been brittle at best.

In turn, the German is planning a major overhaul this summer, with Ugarte, a 22-year-old defensive midfielder, the latest name to be linked with a move to Anfield.

Ugarte heading to Liverpool?
According to journalist Bruno Andrade of CNN Portugal, Liverpool has made contact with Sporting about a potential deal for Ugarte.

The Uruguayan, who has made 43 appearances for his club this season, is said to have held talks.

The club sent scouts to watch him play in Sporting's next round against Juventus, and his performance allegedly 'captivated' the Gunners' recruitment team. Liverpool-vs-Arsenal

Portuguese news agency Andrade’s words are echoed by O Jogo, who adds that Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Leeds are also keeping tabs on Ugarte, implying that Liverpool must act quickly.

Klopp is said to be ‘impressed’ by Ugarte’s performances this season, who could serve as a long-term replacement for Fabinho.

Sporting are reportedly only willing to part ways with their prized asset if his €60 million (£53 million) release clause is met.

However, the same publication claimed that Ugarte’s departure was “practically inevitable,” citing the player’s refusal to renew his current contract.

Meanwhile, Sporting may look to sell him to raise funds for new players this summer.

Liverpool may also face competition from Premier League leaders Arsenal, who were impressed by Ugarte during their March Europa League match against Sporting.
