Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye on the’most promising defender’ in Italian football, whose versatility could be appealing to Jurgen Klopp
This season, Giogio Scalvini has established himself at the heart of the Atalanta defense, scoring two goals in 25 Serie A appearances.
According to Calciomercato, the 19-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of Liverpool, who claim it would take ‘at least €40m’ to convince Atalanta to sell one of their prized assets.
Scalvini, who is under contract with Inter until 2027, has also piqued the interest of a slew of top Italian clubs, including Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, and Napoli.
However, as the Sport Witness report points out, Inter and Juve have budget issues, while the other Serie A clubs would have to sell before pursuing Scalvini.
Liverpool ‘doesn’t have these issues,’ and ‘if they decide to sink the blow,’ they could lose ‘the most promising young defender’ in Italian football.
With the Reds on the rise, Scalvini is “at the top of their watchlist” ahead of the summer, when Jurgen Klopp is expected to make significant changes to his playing staff.
Scalvini’s ability to play defensive midfield – an area in desperate need of reinforcement for Liverpool – as well as centre-back is a huge plus.
According to the report, Klopp would be ‘killing two birds with one stone’ if the club was able to entice the teenager to Anfield.
Klopp and his recruitment team are looking for central midfielders in particular, having dropped out of the race for England international Jude Bellingham, but his comments following their decision to walk away from talks over the England international suggest Scalvani is the right type of target, in that he won’t require a massive outlay.
“There’s nothing to say about it, to be honest,” Klopp said to reporters. “If we don’t talk about the players we’re signing or not signing, why would we talk about this rumor?”
“It has nothing to do with Jude Bellingham.” I’ve never understood why we’re always talking about things we theoretically can’t have. We cannot have six players in the summer, each worth £100 million.
“You have to recognize your abilities and then work with them.” It’s all about what you’re capable of, and you work with that.
“You have to make do with what you’ve got.” You wouldn’t ask for a Ferrari as a five-year-old for Christmas.
“Whatever we need and want, we try everything to get it, but there are times when you have to accept it’s not possible and step back and do something else.”
