Clarkson, 21, played 29 games in the Scottish Premiership alone, scoring four goals and assisting seven times as the Dons finished third behind Celtic and Rangers. If Celtic defeats Inverness in the Scottish Cup final next month, they will qualify for the European group stage.

Aberdeen and Clarkson will, of course, support the Glasgow giants in that one. In any case, they have an exciting adventure in store for them.

Clarkson took to social media after his final loan game for Aberdeen, which happened to be against Celtic on Saturday afternoon, to bid farewell to the Scottish club. He also wished them luck on their planned European adventure, which has been rubber-stamped with the exception of one or two minor details to iron out.

“A big thank you to everyone involved at Aberdeen for making this season an unforgettable one – from their staff who helped me so much, to the players who welcomed me from day one, and the fans who have given me nothing but respect and appreciation and memories that will stay with me forever,” the Liverpool graduate said in a two-part message. Finally, have fun on your European tour.”

Clarkson made 38 appearances for Aberdeen this season, including three in the Scottish Premiership.
