The Chelsea dynamo has the potential to be a world-class engine at Anfield…
Liverpool are planning a midfield overhaul this summer and will be looking for a way to sign Chelsea ace Mason Mount, who has been heavily linked in recent months.
What’s the latest on Mason Mount’s arrival in Liverpool?
According to The Athletic, Arsenal are leading the race to sign the out-of-sorts midfielder as the 22/23 season comes to a close, though Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Manchester United are also interested.
The Blues, who will welcome Mauricio Pochettino to the bench in a few weeks, will also try to reach an agreement with Mount, whose contract at Stamford Bridge is coming to an end.
However, Chelsea are unlikely to keep the England international and have valued him at £60 million if a Premier League rival is able to lure him away from west London.
Mason Mount’s performance in Liverpool would be interesting to see.
Mount’s season has been the most difficult of his career, and while he is beloved by Chelsea fans and a boyhood Blue, his time at the club may be coming to an end.
That’s not to say he hasn’t been one of the most dynamic and dangerous midfielders in the Premier League in recent seasons, with the highlight of his career coming with Chelsea in the Champions League, where he won the 20/21 season and provided the game-winning assist in the final against Manchester City.
According to Sofascore, the 36-cap star had an average top-flight rating of 7.43 last season, scoring 11 goals and providing ten assists, forging 2.4 shots and 1.8 key passes per game, completing 85% of his total passes and making 1.3 tackles per game, and was dubbed “generational” by journalist Benjamin Lynch.
The £80k-per-week gem has primarily been deployed as an attacking midfielder and left-winger over the past few years, similar to Gini Wijnaldum when he was at Newcastle United before moving to Anfield for £25m in 2015.
The Dutchman scored 11 goals in his single season with the Magpies but only 22 goals in 237 appearances for the Reds, reshaped as an industrious machine and hailed as the “perfect” engine for the team by his former German manager.
Mount could certainly take a page from Wijnaldum’s book and play a deeper, pivotal role on Merseyside, having already shown signs of prowess in that area by ranking among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries over the past year, as well as displaying his creative side by ranking among the top 14% for shot-creating actions per 90, according to FBref.
While he has not had the most fruitful season, Mount’s natural ability is undeniable, and he has the potential to become a “superstar,” as journalist Adi Joseph has dubbed him, under Klopp’s tutelage.
