Kentucky’s Mark Pope Loses Former Four-Star Recruit After Freshman Season

It has been a wild offseason for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team. Head coach Mark Pope has continued to land player after player from the NCAA transfer portal. Although the portal officially closed Tuesday night, players can still enroll at their new schools. On Tuesday, just before the portal window closed, Pope received surprising news from one of the players expected to be on the 2024–25 roster. The departure involved a four-star recruit out of Lyon County High School in Eddyville, Kentucky. Travis Branham of 247 Sports announced: “NEWS: Kentucky freshman Travis Perry will enter the transfer portal, a source tells @247Sports. ”

Perry signed his letter of intent on November 15, 2023, to Kentucky. His final season of high school saw him win Kentucky Mr. Basketball. He then enrolled to Kentucky in 2024

During the 2024-25 season, Travis Perry appeared in 31 games for the Kentucky Wildcats. His playing time was limited, averaging just 9.8 minutes per game. The 6-foot-1 guard contributed 2.7 points per game on the season.

Perry’s most notable performance came in the SEC Quarterfinal game against Alabama, where he logged a season-high 30 minutes and scored 11 points, along with 4 rebounds.

Kentucky has since reloaded at the guard position through the transfer portal. The two most recent additions are Denzel Aberdeen from Florida and Jaland Lowe from Pittsburgh, who averaged 16.8 points per game last season. They join Kam Williams, a guard from Tulane, as part of the new backcourt rotation. In addition to guards, the Wildcats also strengthened their frontcourt with the portal signings of Jayden Quaintance from Arizona State and Mouhamed Dioubate from Alabama.
