If a top-four finish is confirmed, Jurgen Klopp may give Arthur Melo his first start for Liverpool against Southampton on the final day of the Premier League season
According to the Liverpool Echo, the German manager’s starting XI against Southampton will be determined by whether Liverpool can beat Manchester United or Newcastle United to a UEFA Champions League spot, though given the odds, this is unlikely.
As a result, with UEFA Europa League football confirmed for next season, Klopp could start a heavily rotated starting XI, and Arthur could be in line for his first start for Liverpool after making just one appearance this season in a disastrous loan spell.
The 26-year-old Brazilian joined Liverpool on deadline day last summer, and he could be considered one of the Merseyside giants’ worst signings in recent years, with Arthur playing just 13 minutes for the Anfield side.
Former Italy international Antonio Cassano once described Arthur as “sensational,” and his first start for Liverpool in his final game for the club is nothing short of embarrassing. However, the midfielder will no doubt relish the opportunity to finally break into Klopp’s starting lineup.
Arthur will want to end his disastrous spell at Liverpool on a high note.
When Liverpool signed Arthur last summer, there was little excitement, but no one could have predicted the midfielder’s time in England would go as badly as it has. Nonetheless, the Juventus-owned player will want to finish his Premier League career on a high note against Southampton.
If Arthur makes the starting lineup, the Brazilian could finally show Liverpool fans what they’ve been missing all season, and with the Saints already out, Arthur could be given a chance to shine against the Championship-bound side in his final game for the Reds.
