Liverpool defeated Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League
Jurgen Klopp claims he’s never seen Liverpool defend set pieces better than they did against Brentford.
The Reds won their sixth game in a row, defeating the Bees 1-0 at Anfield. Mo Salah scored the game’s lone goal, his 30th of the season, tying him with Steven Gerrard on 186 for the club.
Brentford, on the other hand, put pressure on Liverpool throughout the game. Bryan Mbeumo’s goal was disallowed due to offside, but the visitors didn’t create many clear-cut chances.
Klopp’s team is now one point behind Manchester United in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League. The Liverpool manager regards the Bees as the best team he’s ever faced in dead-ball situations, and praised the Reds’ tenacity.
“It’s great, it’s great,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said after a hard-fought victory. I’ve said it a few times now that it was the best defensive set-piece session I’d ever seen. Brentford have many strengths, but their set-pieces are exceptional. I told the boys immediately after the game that the focus and concentration we demonstrated today against the best set-piece team I’d ever faced [was fantastic].
“We or they created 50, 60 set-pieces – throw-ins, corners, free-kicks, goalkeeper takes it from halfway or in his own half, and eight players line up.” Super-difficult. Everyone in this line of eight that we had there today stepped up because they were fully aware of the need in these moments. That was fantastic. First half, a lot of good football moments until Trent lost the ball in that area, which I believe was one of the reasons we stopped playing.
“We had some great moments when we were playing. We came between their lines, mixed it up, in behind, in between, I liked it a lot, but that was a moment to which we need to learn to react much better and continue to do the right things. Second half, when you’re only 1-0 up, it’s clear that they knew we couldn’t avoid set-pieces.
