Sheffield Wednesday supporters were heartbroken to see Djeidi Gassama depart last week—but his start at Rangers has been anything but smooth.
Faced with severe financial challenges, Wednesday were forced to make some tough calls, and Gassama was sold to ease the burden of paying players’ wages. The £2.2 million transfer fee left fans outraged, as many believed it fell short of the winger’s true value.
While the frustration among Wednesday fans is understandable, Gassama’s early days in Scotland have taken an awkward turn.

Unfortunate Rangers Blunder
According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, Gassama made an ill-timed first impression at Rangers by arriving at transfer talks wearing a Boston Celtics jersey—unwittingly referencing the green and white colors associated with Rangers’ fiercest rivals, Celtic FC.
He reportedly had no opportunity to change after training with Sheffield Wednesday at St. George’s Park. While clearly an innocent mistake, the incident was not ideal for someone just beginning his journey with the Glasgow club. Safe to say, Gassama won’t be donning green again anytime soon.
Bright Future Despite Early Slip
Despite the rocky introduction, there’s optimism about Gassama’s potential impact in the Scottish Premiership. He netted eight goals and provided one assist in 47 matches for Sheffield Wednesday last season—outperforming his expected goals (xG) of 6.0.
His average of 3.03 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes points to a player who consistently creates chances and could thrive in the SPL’s slightly less intense environment compared to the English Championship.
Wednesday legend Barry Bannan warned Rangers that Gassama can be inconsistent and may test fans’ patience at times. However, Bannan also emphasized that the young winger has “serious potential” and could develop into a top-tier signing for the club.
In the long run, Gassama’s misstep will likely be a footnote—what matters now is how he responds on the pitch.
