Former Tar Heel Looks for New Start with the Seminoles
Florida State just added a major piece to its wide receiver room and it comes with ACC experience. Gavin Blackwell, a former North Carolina wideout, is officially headed to Tallahassee to finish his college football journey, the program announced on Sunday.
After four years in Chapel Hill, including a redshirt season and bouts with injuries, Blackwell is ready for a fresh start with the Seminoles. And head coach Mike Norvell believes he’s found a difference-maker.
“I’m excited to welcome Gavin to the Nole Family,” Norvell said. “He brings experience and versatility and has played in big games. He can stretch the field vertically with speed and has also proven to be a good route runner with the ability to separate from defenders.”
Norvell emphasized that while injuries have interrupted Blackwell’s career, the potential is still very much there.
“Gavin was productive early in his career before having to deal with injuries and setbacks throughout his journey. He will bring a veteran presence to our talented wide receivers room.”
A Look Back at Blackwell’s Tar Heel Tenure
Blackwell joined the Tar Heels in 2021 and used his redshirt during a quiet freshman season. He broke out in 2022, playing in all 13 games and recording 18 receptions for 239 yards and a touchdown. In 2023, he continued to be a contributor, notching 9 catches for 166 yards across 11 appearances.
Unfortunately, injuries slowed his progress in 2024. He managed only four games, ending the year with four catches for 43 yards. Still, his speed, reliable hands, and precise route-running have kept him on the radar for programs in need of veteran leadership and explosive upside.
A Perfect Fit in Norvell’s Offense?
At Florida State, Blackwell enters a wide receiver corps looking for leadership and production. His ability to stretch the field vertically fits seamlessly with Norvell’s aggressive, fast-paced offense, which thrives on explosive plays and downfield threats.
With FSU eyeing another ACC title run and a potential College Football Playoff berth, Blackwell’s arrival brings depth and experience two things that can prove invaluable during a long, grueling season.
A Second Chance and a New Stage
For Blackwell, this is more than just a transfer it’s a second chance. A chance to reset, to prove himself, and to shine on a team with championship aspirations. Staying in the ACC means he’ll face familiar opponents, but now with a new jersey and a renewed drive.
Gavin Blackwell is a Seminole now and if he can stay healthy, he just might become a key piece in Florida State’s quest for glory.
