This summer, it is critical that more players arrive at Anfield
According to a recent update on the situation, Liverpool are trying to add two more central midfielders during the summer transfer season.
Are Fabinho and Henderson on their way out of Liverpool?
The Reds’ midfield has had a turbulent summer, with significant changes made both in terms of incomings and outgoings.
Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai are two promising acquisitions who should significantly help Liverpool, but James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all left when their contracts ended at the end of last month.
However, it now appears that Fabinho and Jordan Henderson will also be leaving, with both poised to finalize deals to Saudi Arabia in the coming days. That would leave the Reds’ midfield with few choices, implying that more fresh faces will be needed between now and the start of the new Premier League season.
Will Liverpool bring in further midfielders?
According to Football Insider, Liverpool still intends to sign a pair of midfielders this summer as they prepare to replace Fabinho and Henderson:
According to Football Insider, Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp are looking to recruit two additional midfielders this summer. This announcement follows the impending departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabian teams.”
“A well-placed source has told Football Insider that a defensive midfielder is seen as a’must’ – with the impact of Fabinho’s departure set to take its toll on the Merseysiders’ squad.”
This is exactly what Liverpool fans will want to hear, as the impending departures of Fabinho and Henderson were unexpected. Despite their disappointing performances last season, both were expected to play vital squad roles, even though Jurgen Klopp no longer considered them as key starters.
If FSG do not make the funds available to bring in tailor-made replacements for the duo this summer, it will be simply unacceptable, and it is critical that they back Klopp fully this time around, having arguably not provided him with enough funds in previous transfer windows, such as last year’s, when the midfield was not sufficiently added to.
Any two of Romeo Lavia, Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, and Kalvin Phillips make the most sense as potential targets, though the latter will turn 28 later this year and had an injury-plagued first season at Manchester City, barely getting a look-in with a team the Reds will be hoping to compete with.
As the report implies, securing a good No.6 in the mold of Fabinho is especially important for Liverpool, given the lack of depth in that position if the Brazilian departs. Despite being only 19 years old, Lavia is perhaps the top option there.
Despite being relegated to the Championship, the Belgian excelled for Southampton last season, averaging 2.1 tackles per game – the second-highest tally in the club – and had the greatest pass completion rate (86.4%) of everyone who started more than one league game.
