Jörg Schmadtke appears to have been identified as Liverpool’s next sporting director. If he is appointed this summer, the following will occur

Liverpool’s search for a replacement for Julian Ward has taken several months since the former sporting director announced he would step down this summer.

But, at long last, it appears that Liverpool may have an heir to Ward’s throne.

Liverpool is now in advanced talks with Jörg Schmadtke, according to The Telegraph. According to the report, he is a close ally of Jürgen Klopp and could be an ideal fit for the Liverpool boardroom.

Schmadtke previously worked for Wolfsburg before stepping down earlier this year due to family obligations.

Schmadtke told Kicker after resigning from his position:

“There are other things I want to do in life.” First and foremost, I’m thinking of my wife and family, who have had to endure many years of neglect. It’s time to call it a day.”

“But,” Schmadtke continued. “It’s possible that after three months, I won’t be able to take it anymore.” Worse, my wife chases me out of the house once more.”

It’s been a little more than three months, but it appears that prediction may have come true. Schmadtke’s hiatus from football, like Klopp’s, could be brief when Liverpool comes calling.

So here are four possibilities if he is appointed:

The budget was used effectively.

Schmadtke has always had to work on extremely tight budgets, even smaller than those of Liverpool and FSG, and yet he has always done well.

Schmadtke only spent more than $45 million (£35 million/€40 million) in one of his five seasons at Wolfsburg. Nonetheless, he spends money wisely and has brought in some excellent players.

When he joined Wolfsburg, the club was just two points above the relegation zone. Schmadtke oversaw the team’s transformation back into a regular European club, even reaching the Champions League.

Ridle Baku, Maxence Lacroix, Aster Vranckx, Jonas Wind, Matias Svanberg, Wout Weghorst, Patrick Wimmer, and Jakub Kaminski are just a few of the players he has brought in during his tenure.

Some of the aforementioned celebrities have since been linked to lucrative moves elsewhere. Weghorst is now at Manchester United, and Vranckx is at Barcelona.

Schmadtke will be given a larger budget by FSG at Liverpool, but he will still have to operate on a smaller scale in comparison to the club’s rivals. His track record at Wolfsburg demonstrates that he is up to the challenge.

In fact, his ability to squeeze the most out of a budget may make him the ideal frontman for the FSG strategy.
