Tar Heel Reunion: Pinson and Manek Face Off in Unexpected Pro Matchup
Basketball fans were treated to a fun surprise as two former UNC standouts went head-to-head in a game few expected — and it didn’t disappoint.
Theo Pinson and the Guaynabo Mets faced off against Brady Manek and the Ponce Lions in a showdown that saw both Tar Heel alums put on impressive performances. Ultimately, it was Pinson’s squad that came out on top, earning a seven-point home victory.
Pinson showcased his trademark versatility, finishing with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists in a strong all-around game. He even scored over Manek in a moment of friendly “Tar Heel on Tar Heel” competition that got fans talking.
On the other side, Manek delivered a big performance as well. The sharpshooting forward poured in 26 points and pulled down 10 boards to lead the Lions. His pick-and-pop three-pointer sparked memories of his impact during his lone season in Chapel Hill. Manek also made his presence felt on defense, notching a key block that sparked a fast-break opportunity.
While Pinson and Manek never shared the court at UNC, both became fan favorites thanks to their passion, personality, and energy. Their paths to Chapel Hill were different, but each left a lasting mark on the Tar Heel program — and now, they’re still making noise at the pro level.
Manek recently joined the Ponce Lions to give their offense a three-point boost, and it’s already paying off. Meanwhile, Pinson came out of retirement just last month, signing with Guaynabo on May 22 — proving he’s still got game, even while carving out a new role as a broadcaster.
Seeing these two former Tar Heels go head-to-head was a special treat — and a reminder of how deep Carolina’s basketball legacy runs.
