Luke Chambers, a Liverpool youngster, has signed a new contract with the club he has been with since the age of six.

The 18-year-old has spent the second half of the season with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, making 11 appearances since January. He has also participated in Jurgen Klopp’s pre-season tour and has been named to the matchday squad twice in his professional career.

Chambers was a member of Ian Foster’s England U19s squad that won the European Championships last summer, defeating Israel 3-1 in the final. The full-back won in Slovakia alongside fellow Reds prospect Jarrell Quansah.

The extension comes amid reports in Scotland that Championship side Watford were keeping tabs on the Ayrshire full-back’s progress. The Daily Record’s Scott Burns reported in April that Hornets technical director Ben Manga had traveled to watch Chambers play Celtic.

Killie manager Derek McInnes has praised him during his time north of the border. “It was a great debut for Luke Chambers,” the former Aberdeen manager said.

“He contributed to the goal, picked out the pass, and was excellent in possession.” He was making his senior debut at the age of 18, and while he was nervous, his performance was mature.

“I made my first senior debut 36 years ago, and I certainly didn’t play as well as him!” He was fantastic. He appears to be about 13, but he plays like a 30-year-old.

“He’s so mature, so calm with his defending, his decision-making on the ball was very good, his choice of passes, his choice of crosses, none more so than for Danny’s goal, and he’s fitted in brilliantly.”

Chambers’ loan at Rugby Park is set to expire at the end of the season, but in the meantime, the England youth international will look to guide McInnes‘ side out of trouble.

Kilmarnock are above Ross County at the bottom of the table, but they are still in danger of relegation from Scotland’s top flight, sitting in the relegation qualification position on goal difference with Dundee United.
