Family-Rooted Star Braydon Hawthorne Commits to Kentucky

Family-Rooted Star Braydon Hawthorne Commits to Kentucky: Fueled by Love, Lifted by Wingspan

Mark Pope just secured another pivotal piece to Kentucky’s rising 2025–26 roster, but this commitment came with something deeper than just talentit came with heart. On Tuesday night, four-star small forward Braydon Hawthorne announced his commitment to the Wildcats live on 247Sports’ YouTube channel, choosing Kentucky over Duke, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, where he was once committed. But behind the cameras and headlines stood the people who helped him rise: his mother, father, grandfather, and a tight-knit family whose unwavering support has been the bedrock of his journey.

Hawthorne, a 6-foot-8 wing with a staggering 7-foot-3 wingspan and smooth perimeter game, becomes the 14th addition to Pope’s retooled roster. He joins fellow four-stars Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno in a class designed to stretch the floor and compete with anyone in the nation.

His commitment wasn’t just about basketball it was a full-circle moment for a young man raised by a village. From early morning workouts with his dad to countless sacrifices made by his mother and guidance from his grandfather, Braydon’s foundation of humility and drive is rooted in family.

“His ability to shoot the ball [is his greatest strength],” said high school coach Arkell Bruce. “But what sets him apart is how coachable and respectful he is traits he clearly got from his upbringing. He’s a yes-sir, no-sir type of player.”

From Setback to Breakthrough

Hawthorne originally pledged to West Virginia in October 2024 but reopened his recruitment after a coaching change in March. It was during that uncertain period that his support system stepped in, reminding him of who he is and what he’s capable of. With their backing, Braydon took visits to all his finalists, including a pivotal trip to Lexington in April. That visit his family’s favorite too sealed the deal.

“Braydon is a unique player,” said On3 analyst Jamie Shaw. “He’s a late bloomer with high-end potential. What he lacks in raw explosion, he makes up for with instincts, length, and the kind of calm maturity that’s rare at this age.”

His senior season at Huntington Prep was a turning point. Once on the fringe of the top 100, Hawthorne soared up the ranks thanks to strong shooting, sharp reads, and unshakable poise traits shaped by those who raised him.

What It Means for Kentucky

For Mark Pope, Hawthorne is more than a high-upside recruit. He’s a symbol of what Pope’s vision is all about length, skill, character, and culture. While Hawthorne may not start immediately, he has the makings of a key rotation player and eventual breakout star.

More importantly, Kentucky isn’t just getting a basketball player. They’re getting a young man grounded in values, backed by a family that will be cheering from courtside to the rafters.

Welcome to the Big Blue Nation, Braydon. You didn’t just bring a 7-foot-3 wingspan you brought the strength of a family. And that’s the real foundation for greatness.
