Failure of Rangers methods is evident. Patrick Stewart is on the shortlist for a one-man managing position.

The more things change, the more they stay the same—Rangers, under Barry Ferguson, have fallen back into familiar patterns.

If bravery is about stepping up and taking responsibility, then this current Rangers squad is the opposite—lacking accountability at both ends of the pitch.

Ferguson didn’t overpromise, but he did vow to implement changes. Yet, against Motherwell, the Hall of Famer stuck with the same ineffective shape and system that has plagued the team all season.

Barry Ferguson Stumbles into the Same Tactical Pitfalls

While the interim boss has limited options in terms of personnel, frustration among fans is growing as they witness what Albert Einstein might define as madness—repeating the same failing approach and expecting different results.

There’s a glaring, trophy-laden example of what works in Scotland, just across the city, making Rangers’ reluctance to adapt even more baffling.

With nothing to lose, Ferguson must make the changes he spoke about as soon as possible, giving players like Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande the support they need in midfield.

Who Should Be Rangers’ Next Manager?

If 2025 has taught Patrick Stewart anything, it’s that Rangers desperately need a manager with an aggressive, attacking approach. But is it too late to make the obvious choice?

Craig Moore revealed that Kevin Muscat was close to landing the Rangers job before Philippe Clement got the nod.

“He had two interviews at the time, and he was devastated to miss out,” Moore said. “He felt it was a great opportunity, but now he’s doing well in China, and that ship has well and truly sailed.”

Previously, Moore praised Muscat’s attacking style: “His teams play entertaining football, they score goals, they create. As far as I’m concerned, he’d be a great option for Rangers.”

As it was in 2023, so it is in 2025—Rangers fans won’t tolerate another pragmatist sticking rigidly to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
