Bosnia and Herzegovina international Niko Katic, who spent four years at Rangers, is reportedly eager to return to Ibrox to help Philippe Clement address the club’s defensive crisis.
The 28-year-old centre-back, currently playing for FC Zurich, is considering a January move, with his agents in talks with several clubs, including one in the English Championship. However, sources suggest Katic’s top preference is a return to Rangers.
Katic was one of Steven Gerrard’s first signings in 2018 and became a fan favorite after scoring a memorable Old Firm winner at Parkhead. His progress was derailed by a serious ACL injury, and he eventually moved to Zurich in 2022 after a loan spell with Hajduk Split. In Switzerland, Katic has regained his form, which has also earned him international recognition with Bosnia and Herzegovina after switching allegiances from Croatia.
Rangers are currently dealing with significant injuries in defense, with John Souttar, Leon Balogun, Nana Kasanwirjo, and captain James Tavernier all sidelined. This has heightened the need for reinforcements, and Katic has emerged as a potential solution.
A source close to Katic’s representatives told *Record Sport*:
“We’ve had nothing concrete yet, but there are media stories, and of course, Niko would love to return to Rangers. We are in talks with some clubs, including one in England, but Rangers would be Nikola’s priority. He still has 18 months left on his Zurich contract, but if a return to Rangers is meant to happen, he will be there.”
Former Rangers captain and current agent Craig Moore also endorsed Katic’s return. Speaking on *Go Radio*, Moore said:
“Rangers need a central defender, and Katic has been mentioned recently. He was solid during his time at the club before his ACL injury. With Rangers needing immediate impact from new signings, Katic fits the profile. There’s no time for a transition period—it’s about delivering now.”
With Clement facing a depleted defensive lineup and Katic familiar with the club’s demands, a move back to Ibrox could prove beneficial for both parties.
