Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo’s move to Coventry City may have delayed, but before the next transfer deadline, an exit from Ibrox is still very much in the cards.
According to reports on Thursday, Coventry was on the verge of bringing Matondo back to England on a temporary loan. At the end of the current season, Rangers may have recovered two-thirds of their £3 million investment and made the deal a permanent one.
But when it became clear that Coventry and Rangers were still far apart in terms of bonus payments and the extras that would be part of the deal, Rabbi Matondo was forced to start over.

Even if the Coventry ship may have gone, a number of competing suitors are still interested in the out-of-favor winger before the transfer market closes on Monday, February 3.
As Rangers’ negotiations with Coventry City come to a standstill, Nantes moves for Rabbi Matondo. Earlier this month, Rangers News exclusively revealed that Serie A teams Lecce and Torino were interested in Rabbi Matondo.
Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, Coventry’s Championship rivals, also shown interest.
In France, Nantes is presently mired in the relegation zone. Out of 18 league games, Antoine Koumbouare’s squad has only won three and scored 21 goals. Meanwhile, if Sorba Thomas’ tenure at the Stade de la Beaujoire is shortened, the need for attacking reinforcements at The Canaries will only increase.
The Hull Daily Mail claims that the winger, who is currently on loan in France from Huddersfield Town, is currently in negotiations to return across the Channel and join Hull City.
Until the completion of the current season, Nantes has not given up on keeping Thomas. However, since Tigers manager Ruben Selles publicly expresses his adoration for Hull, it has been rumored that Huddersfield has accepted their bid.
According to Selles, Sorba is performing admirably at Nantes. He is familiar with the [English Championship], has competed there previously, and has achieved great success.
He is the kind of player that would be a great asset to our team.
Thomas is reportedly valued at around £3.5 million by Huddersfield, and Philippe Clement has excluded Matondo from Rangers’ last three games. Matondo, meanwhile, might be released by Rangers for about half that amount.
After being added to Blackburn Rovers’ summer shopping list, Matondo’s promising start to 2024–2025 was cut short by injury.
Since his comeback, he has lagged behind players like Ianis Hagi and Nedim Bajrami in the hierarchy, and he was left out of Philippe Clement’s squad for this month’s games against Aberdeen, Fraserburgh, and Manchester United.
When Rangers defeated Aberdeen 3-0 on January 15, Clement selected Zak Lovelace over Matondo. Clement would clarify, “I can say about Rabbi that I made a choice.” “I think they are performing better right now, so it was a sporting decision to put two young guys [Bailey Rice was also included in place of Kieran Dowell].”
