According to Gordon Young, Rangers scheduled flights for Kristers Tobers years ago, prior to his recent transfer to Aberdeen
The former FK Liepaja manager stated that the centre-back was due to spend a week on trial at Ibrox when he was 17, but an injury scuppered his plans.
The 24-year-old was a target for the Gers in 2017, however he completed a switch in the winter transfer window and is now at Pittodrie.
“I mentioned him to a few teams down south, and Sheffield United was one of the others showing an interest,” Young stated in an interview with the Scottish Sun on January 13.
“Rangers were so interested up here that they booked his flights and made arrangements for him to spend a week on trial in Glasgow, where he would also watch a first-team game.”
Rangers desperately need a defender transfer in January. After progressing through Liepaja’s youth system, Tobers went on to Lechia Gdansk, Grasshopper Club Zurich, and ultimately Aberdeen. With all of the defensive injuries, the Light Blues appear to be in dire need of a centre-back.
Perhaps the Bears’ finest defender, John Souttar, has been absent for a few weeks, and Leon Balogun is also not available.
Recently, Dujon Sterling has been filling in at centre-back, although the 25-year-old has missed the last two games due to an injury sustained during the 3–3 draw with Hibernian on January 5.
In the last two games, Rangers have relied on Clinton Nsiala, a 20-year-old whose performances have won over many.
Robin Propper, who hasn’t had the finest start at the Glaswegian team and has been under fire for his subpar performances in the current campaign, has been paired with the French youth at the back.
It’s unclear if Tobers will play on the pitch at Ibrox on Wednesday, January 15, after making his Aberdeen debut in their draw with Hearts on January 12.
