Celtic’s performance last night impressed Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.
Brendan Rodgers’ team came back from an early two-goal deficit to tie the score before halftime with a brilliant brace from Adam Idah.
However, Morgan Rogers completed his hat-trick in the final seconds to round off the scoring after Ollie Watkins had given Villa the lead again on the hour mark. Villa manager Emery was impressed by Celtic’s competitiveness throughout the game, even though they lost 4–2.
During his news conference after the game, the Spaniard was specifically questioned on the performance of his opponents: “Good,” he said. “The expectation we had of them was how they played.”After we got off to a strong start, they were competing extremely well.
“We dominate again in the second half, pushing, imposing, controlling the game, making good passes, placing ourselves well, and being more in their box. We defeated them (Celtic) in this way.”
Despite losing to BSC Young Boys at the end of their league phase campaign, Celtic’s 1-0 victory against them last week guaranteed them a spot in tomorrow’s Champions League knockout-round play-off draw.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are possible rivals for the Parkhead team, and Rodgers’ team will have a difficult time qualifying for the round of 16.
In less than two weeks, the opening leg of the match will take place in Glasgow’s east end, but in the meanwhile, focus will shift to domestic play. This weekend, Celtic will play Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership in an attempt to recover from their defeat on Wednesday.
