Football fans rarely pass up an opportunity to annoy opposing players, but Southampton fans displayed class during their match against Liverpool this afternoon

The game at St Mary’s marks the end of Bobby Firmino’s eight-year career with the Reds, with the 31-year-old scoring inside the first 15 minutes.

He was replaced on the hour mark as Jurgen Klopp made four substitutions, and he was embraced by a number of teammates as he walked off the field.

Indeed, as Ian Doyle pointed out on Twitter, it wasn’t just those from Merseyside who praised the Brazilian forward.

“So ends Firmino’s #LFC career, who is going off,” the journalist tweeted as the substitution was made. What a legend he will always be. Southampton fans give Firmino a standing ovation.”

It’s a testament to how much of an impact the Brazilian has had in England that even opposition supporters greeted him warmly as he ended his Liverpool career.

The tributes have been flowing freely over the last fortnight for a player who has been a truly magnificent servant to the Anfield cause, and with good reason.

It’s unfortunate that his time at the club is coming to an end on a low note, with Klopp’s side failing to qualify for the Champions League, but it’s fitting that he signed off in his final game for us with his 111th goal in red.

Bobby Firmino was such a classy footballer in every way that Southampton fans gave him a well-deserved standing ovation. Congratulations, Saints fans.
