Duke vs. Michigan: A Classic College Hoops Rivalry Returns in 2025
One of college basketball’s most storied non-conference rivalries is getting a reboot.
Duke and Michigan—two historic bluebloods will square off once again this upcoming season, renewing a rivalry that has delivered unforgettable moments across decades. The game is scheduled for February 21, 2026, in Washington, D.C., marking their first meeting since 2013.
For long-time fans, the mere mention of Duke vs. Michigan brings back images of Grant Hill soaring, Jalen Rose jawing, and the Fab Five trying (and failing) to dethrone the Blue Devils dynasty of the early ‘90s. Duke won all three of those iconic matchups between 1991 and 1993, including a memorable 1992 NCAA Championship game victory. But make no mistake none of those wins came easy.
This year’s edition adds a fresh chapter, as both programs enter new eras with respected young coaches at the helm. Jon Scheyer, now in his fourth season, continues to build on the legacy of Mike Krzyzewski, while Dusty May, recently hired by Michigan, looks to restore pride in Ann Arbor following his successful run at FAU and a strong reputation built during his time at Indiana.
While the programs haven’t faced off in over a decade, there’s no shortage of history. From Cameron Indoor showdowns to tournament clashes, and the unforgettable days of Robert “Tractor” Traylor charging through the lane, this rivalry has always delivered physical play, elite talent, and high drama.
This neutral-site clash in the nation’s capital adds yet another twist. For Duke, stepping out of conference play in February has become a strategic tradition under Coach K and now Scheyer fine-tuning the team before March Madness. For Michigan, it’s a statement game, a chance to measure Dusty May’s rebuild against one of the best in the sport.
Mark your calendars. Duke vs. Michigan is back. And college basketball is better for it.
