Bryce Davis, a Duke football freshman, was already one of the most highly anticipated recruits in recent memory. He was ranked as one of the finest edge rushers in the country, was awarded Sports Illustrated Defensive Player of the Year, and participated in the Under Armour All-America Next game.
Davis attended Grimsley High School in Greensboro, NC, which has one of the greatest high school football programs in the state of North Carolina.
He’s seen as a potential early-round NFL Draft choice, and he just jumped up the final 247sports Class of 2025 rankings to become the highest-rated recruit to the Duke football team in at least the previous decade.
The 4-star prospect was previously ranked #148 in the nation, #20 as an edge rusher, and #3 in the state of North Carolina, but has now risen to #63 in the nation and #5 as an edge rusher, confirming his status as one of the best defensive players in the whole class.
Davis had offers from Georgia and South Carolina, and he was previously committed to Clemson before decommitting and signing with the Blue Devils.
“It surprised some when Davis committed to Clemson when he did on July 20th over Georgia, Duke, and South Carolina,” 247sports’ Adam Rowe wrote on how Duke got Davis. “It’s not shocking that an excellent football player does this, but many people close to Davis expected him to wind up in Durham.
He had witnessed two high-profile games the previous year, when the Blue Devils hosted College GameDay for the first time in school history and defeated the Tigers early in the season. Davis’ parents, who are educators and police officers, allegedly loved the prospect of their son playing just down the road, as well as Duke’s blend of athletics and academics.
Davis is anticipated to have an immediate impact as a freshman and contribute significantly to the Blue Devil defensive front, which was one of the best in the NCAA last season.
Duke was second in the country in tackles for loss (116) and fourth in sacks (43) in 2024.
With a defensive-minded head coach in Manny Diaz, Davis couldn’t have asked for a better mentor to help him take his game to the next level as a player with the potential to be a high draft pick in a few seasons. Davis will provide extra punch to Duke’s already impressive defensive front seven.
