Alexander-Arnold’s form has skyrocketed since his recent role change. The 24-year-old starts at right-back but roams into central midfield on the ball to become the team’s playmaker.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp discussed making this system change at a point in the season when there was nothing to lose. Since the switch, Liverpool has won seven of their last eight games, drawing the other against Arsenal.

Several years ago, England manager Gareth Southgate experimented with Alexander-Arnold in midfield for 45 minutes. Klopp wasn’t thrilled with that decision. Carragher explains why the player can challenge to play for the national team in that position and reminds Liverpool manager Gareth Southgate of the Southgate experiment (h/t Sky Sports):

“When it comes to England’s midfield options, there are Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham – but not much else.” I believe he is pushing there. Forget about the hybrid role; he could play midfield for England.

“I don’t think we’ve ever talked about another fullback as much as we do about him.” Nobody else comes up in conversation as much as he does.”

Gary Neville questioned Alexander-Arnold’s ability to play in midfield, where things are different than in wide areas, a few weeks ago.

One can imagine that the former Manchester United defender forgot that the 24-year-old was a midfielder before Klopp converted him to a right-back.

What the Liverpool man has done in recent weeks suggests that he may be able to be deployed in that position on a permanent basis now. If that is the case, the Reds may have to look for a right-back or a right-sided centre-back in the market.

By the way, Klopp and his staff will make the final decision. The summer window is quickly approaching, and decisions on player incomings must be made quickly in order to complete deals before the start of pre-season.
