Darwin Nunez has been announced as Liverpool FC’s new number nine, having switched shirt numbers a year into his LFC tenure

Nunez arrived at Anfield as a club record signing, but his first season on Merseyside was a mixed bag.

Despite scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in 42 games, the Uruguayan finished the season out of favor and under scrutiny from Jurgen Klopp.

Nunez is expected to return from his summer holiday more calm and with a better command of English – and he is certainly confident of doing so.

Nunez has taken over the No. 9 shirt previously worn by Roberto Firmino before his departure this summer, according to Liverpool.

Nunez originally wore the No. 27, but has switched numbers swiftly, having evidently set his sights on it upon his arrival.

The 23-year-old wore the No. 9 for Benfica, and his Instagram username remained @darwin_n9, implying that he chose the No. 27 because the two numbers add up to nine.

Beyond Firmino, the No. 9 shirt has been worn by a diverse range of Liverpool strikers in recent years, including Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, and Iago Aspas.

Aspas took up the shirt from Andy Carroll, with past Premier League occupants including Fernando Torres, Rob Fowler, Djibril Cisse, El Hadji Diouf, Nicolas Anelka, and Ian Rush.
