Cooper Flagg’s Big Deal: The Secret Sauce That Made New Balance Win the Race

When Cooper Flagg stepped onto the national radar as a high school junior, it wasn’t just college scouts and NBA front offices that took notice  the sneaker industry did too.

Flagg, widely regarded as a generational basketball talent and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, became the hottest prospect in not just hoops but also in marketing. His mix of skill, charisma, and sky-high ceiling had Nike, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance all jockeying for his signature. But in the end, only one brand secured the golden ticket.

New Balance won the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes.

And according to a report by The Athletic, it wasn’t just about money  it was about one secret component that set them apart.

“New Balance was confident in its pitch  particularly with one secret component, which it hoped would make all the difference,” wrote Brendan Marks of The Athletic.

While that “secret” hasn’t been confirmed publicly, insiders believe it centers around a unique offer: an unprecedented creative control over his own signature brand. The deal reportedly allows Flagg, now the Dallas Mavericks’ newest franchise cornerstone, to co-design not just a shoe but an entire line  with a focus on storytelling, family values, and his Maine roots.

Why Cooper Chose New Balance

Nike might have the legacy. Adidas has global muscle. But New Balance brought something different  a blueprint.

They pitched Flagg on being the face of a movement, not just a product line. In a market increasingly saturated by recycled campaigns, New Balance promised individuality, authenticity, and long-term vision. They made it clear: Flagg wouldn’t just be another athlete on a poster  he would shape the narrative.

Sources close to the situation say the pitch mirrored what Kawhi Leonard received back in 2018, but even more player-centric. And with New Balance’s increasing foothold in the NBA thanks to Leonard, Jamal Murray, and Zach LaVine, Flagg saw a future that was both bold and personal.

A New Era Begins

The agreement marks a new chapter for both Flagg and New Balance. For Flagg, it’s a launching pad to superstardom. For New Balance, it’s an all-in investment in the face of basketball’s future.

As Flagg suits up alongside Kyrie Irving in Dallas, eyes will be watching  not just to see how he performs on the court, but what he’ll be wearing on his feet.

And just maybe, what started as a “secret component” will soon become the sneaker world’s next revolution.
