A few managers in the Premier League might find it advantageous to adopt Philippe Clement’s Rangers strategy
Because, as managers with teams deeper than the Marianas Trench lament a demanding schedule of games, who knew that, in the words of the distressed Pep Guardiola, a lavishly assembled, superstar-studded Manchester City club “cannot compete” without Rodri? Such justifications are not acceptable to Clement.
Rather, the Rangers manager is resolved to see a 12-game stretch from now until the beginning of February as a plus.
An opportunity to rest some sore limbs, try out other players in roles that are a little different from his own, and shift his pack.
Thankfully, Rangers also have access to options that Clement could only imagine in August.
before Nedim Bajrami arrived from Sassuolo in a £3.4 million deadline-day trade, when Ianis Hagi was out of favor, when Hamza Igamane was brand-new to Scottish football, and when Danilo was injured.
In contrast, Rangers’ top scorer Vaclav Cerny has been substituted out of each of their last three Scottish Premiership games at the 70-minute mark. Ross McCausland’s imminent comeback seems especially appropriate, as Clement tries to prevent his overworked Czech winger from spraining his piano-wire muscles.
Philippe Clement suggests opportunities for Ridvan Yilmaz and Ross McCausland of Rangers.
“The holidays are here. Clement told reporters at his press conference on Wednesday before their Boxing Day trip to St. Mirren, “It is a more busy period, but look at the period we had in October, November, and December.” There has been a time like that in the past.
“There is no doubt that we will have to handle that. In that sense, I’m glad Ross is returning. He has been absent for a while due to a foot issue. Now that he is feeling better, I hope he can mature enough to occasionally let go of Vaclav.
Yilmaz could play left-back for Rangers in the future.
For everyone, it’s the first time in football history that we play so many games. For that, you need a team that is both emotionally and physically prepared,” Clement continues. “You make more excuses the more you gripe about something.
And since everyone on the team wants to play football, I don’t want to make excuses. Everybody wants to win. This is the case. It’s as if you want to run 20 miles yet want to win a marathon! It isn’t taking place.
Does it work well for football? In my opinion, no, and everyone else concurs. However, we must prioritize ourselves. There will be more opportunities [for them to impress] if everyone is alert and displays themselves.
Rangers’ Thursday game begins at St. Mirren Park at 5:45.
