Steven Thompson believed John Souttar was extremely fortunate not to have contributed to Rangers conceding in the first half of a “huge” match against Hearts
The centre-back made a terrible backpass that Kenneth Vargas seized on at Ibrox on Sunday, but Jack Butland rushed out to clear the danger.
Former Rangers striker Thompson, who was reporting the game for BBC Sportsound on November 10, gave his first response to the incident in a game that the Gers won 1-0.
“A pretty big error from John Souttar there, really short with the back pass there, Vargas was onto it, he sees Butland running out, I believe he kind of bottles it a little bit, he thinks he’s gonna get caught, but he’s really gotta make some
“A huge letdown for the Rangers there. Huge.”
John Souttar is a lucky boy in Rangers vs Hearts.
This has been a concern for Rangers pretty much all season, just moments of pure stupidity, and Souttar was extremely fortunate that his huge error was not punished harder.
The Gers were leading at the moment thanks to Cyriel Dessers’ goal, and while Hearts had a brief spell afterward, they were pretty comfortable at that point in the game.
So Souttar’s strange backpass could have caused serious problems for the hosts, undoing all of their hard work to get into the lead.
Rangers survived, held the lead until halftime, and then went on to win three points, capping off a successful few days for Philippe Clement and his teammates following the gutsy Europa League tie at Olympiacos.
They will need a lot more in the coming months, but at least they can start the international break on a high.
