Ange Postecoglou has indicated that Dane Scarlett has a future at Tottenham Hotspur following the club’s League Cup loss at Craven Cottage last night
Following Fulham’s penalty shootout setback, Postecoglou spoke to Football.London about Dane Scarlett’s future.
Spurs were not at their best yesterday night, as the Australian manager made nine changes from the squad that overcame Bournemouth 2-0 the previous Saturday.
Tottenham struggled in the first half, with only Richarlison and Micky van de Ven starting.
Postecoglou’s team trailed 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Van de Ven own goal, and the Spurs manager turned to Scarlett.
He came on at halftime to replace Giovani Lo Celso and played up front alongside Richarlison.
To force a penalty shootout, the Brazilian scored his first goal of the season. Spurs were ousted from the League Cup at the first attempt owing to a botched penalty kick by Davinson Sanchez.
Scarlett’s bench performance, on the other side, impressed Postecoglou.
In a press conference following Tuesday night’s game, Postecoglou praised Scarlett and said he had a future with the club.
“Yeah, I thought he was pretty bright when he came on,” he confessed. “He’s been great for us in training; he works really hard.”
“Look, I’ll sit down with Dane over the next few days and map out a plan of action for him.” I feel he has a great future at our club and appreciate his striker skills.
“With young players, it’s always a balance of will they get enough game time because, for him, the next stage of development is to play.” He played in a lot of games last year, and I think he’s improved as a player since then.
“I’ll make that decision over the next couple of days and sit down with him, but I certainly see him as a Tottenham player, and a lot of that will depend on what else happens over the next two or three days.”
Scarlett is the only striker in Tottenham’s team now that Harry Kane has left.
Tottenham could yet sign another forward before the deadline on Friday. However, given the current circumstances, it would be unexpected to see the child loaned.
The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, where he made an impression early on.
He appears to have impressed his new manager, and until Spurs sign a new striker, he appears to be on his way out.
