An ex-Duke basketball player is prepared to return after a months-long trip.

Former Duke basketball star Paolo Banchero is ready to make his return for the Orlando Magic after a brief absence due to a torn oblique.

Just two days before sustaining the injury in late October, the 22-year-old standout delivered a career-best performance with 50 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in a win over the Indiana Pacers. Through five games this season—his third since being selected first overall in the 2022 NBA Draft—Banchero has been on a tear, averaging career highs of 29.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists while shooting an efficient 49.5% from the field.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Banchero is expected to rejoin the Magic lineup either Thursday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves or Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks. Charania reported that Banchero “participated fully in Wednesday’s practice” and is likely to be upgraded to questionable on the injury report.

The Magic, who also feature fellow Duke alumnus Wendell Carter Jr., boast a 22-16 record and are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Last season, Banchero earned his first All-Star selection while averaging 21.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. His contributions helped lead the Magic to a 47-35 record and their first playoff appearance since 2020. Now, Orlando looks forward to the boost Banchero’s return will bring as they aim to maintain their strong start to the season.
