The club’s leading scorer over the previous two seasons, Alessia Russo, is departing three years after signing in 2020.

Alessia Russo will depart Manchester United this summer as a free agent after the team was unable to sign the forward to a long-term deal.

The 24-year-old joined United in 2020 and has made 59 appearances in her three years with the club. This season, she led United in scoring for the second consecutive season with 13 goals across all competitions.

According to The Manchester Evening News, talks on a new contract have been going on for 18 months, but United waited too long to present the winner of Euro 2022 with a deal that was judged acceptable.

Arsenal made two world-record offers for Russo in January, and the North London club is unquestionably the favorite to sign her.

Clubs in Spain and America are keeping an eye on the issue, while Olympique Lyonnais of France is also interested. Russo traveled to America as an 18-year-old in 2017 to play college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels for two years, so she has experience playing there.

After the season ended at the end of May, it is believed that United presented Russo an improved contract offer, but by that time the player had already decided she would be looking for a new team for the upcoming campaign.

Prior to earning the fans’ player of the year title this season, Russo earned United’s players’ player of the year accolade in 2021–2022.
