Alan Shearer, a Newcastle United icon, has sent a tough message to James Maddison ahead of his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange postecoglou‘s Tottenham Hotspur paid £40 million to sign the 26-year-old midfielder from Leicester City.

They have rebuffed Newcastle’s interest, which has been following the England international since last summer. However, it appears that the Magpies had cold feet at the last minute and decided to distance themselves from him.

Eddie Howe will consider other options, while Maddison will hope that a transfer to Tottenham is the right one. And the move comes at a time when Tottenham’s finest player might be on his way out.

Harry Kane‘s future is once again uncertain, as his contract is set to expire next summer. Bayern Munich has made an offer for England captain Harry Kane, allowing him to take his skills to the Bundesliga and finally win some silverware.

That would be a big setback for Tottenham, as well as a problem for Maddison in Shearer’s view.

Maddison’s message from Alan Shearer
Shearer wrote about Kane potentially leaving Tottenham this summer in an essay for the Athletic, and he linked it to the club’s pursuit of Maddison.

“If I were Maddison, after I’d sorted out personal terms, the first thing I’d ask Tottenham is assurances that Kane isn’t leaving,” he wrote.

“Imagine how pissed you’d be if you imagined yourself setting up opportunities for one of the world’s best finishers and then, bang — he’s gone.”

Newcastle is free of uncertainties.
While the future of one player should not influence your decision to join a club, the idea of playing alongside Kane must have piqued Maddison’s interest. He had a fantastic relationship with Jamie Vardy at Leicester and might replicate it with Kane.

It highlights the instability at Spurs, who had a disastrous season both on and off the field last season. They will try to progress under Ange postecoglou, but losing Kane would be devastating.

Of course, Maddison can succeed without Kane at Tottenham, but a transfer to Newcastle would have provided the offensive midfielder with a clear direction.

Newcastle‘s direction is evident. There is ambition at every level, and the appropriate people are in place to make that aspiration a reality.

While Shearer does not believe Maddison should have chosen Newcastle over Tottenham, he has identified a significant concern with his selection that may come to light if Kane leaves.
