Joel Matip’s departure from Liverpool this summer is becoming increasingly inevitable

That’s according to a Goal report this morning. According to reports, the 31-year-old has been the subject of ‘increasing rumors’ that he could be sold at the conclusion of the season. Those murmurs are claimed to have come from within the club.

With Ibrahima Konate allegedly being Jurgen Klopp’s chosen partner for Virgil van Dijk, Matip may be transferred to free up finances.

This summer, the Cameroonian will enter the final year of his Liverpool contract. As a result, a’suitable’ offer would be ‘difficult to refuse’ in the window. Goal then assesses Matip’s chances of leaving Anfield.

Matip is on his way out of Liverpool.

Matip leaving Liverpool this summer would be surprising. But it doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be the best option.

This season, the big man has fallen short of his customary excellent standards. After an injury-free season the previous year, he’s missed a lot of football this time around as well.

As he nears the end of his contract, it’s evident that Joel will not sign a new one until 2024. As a result, transferring him this summer makes a lot of sense.

It’s unlikely they’d be able to get a high price for an injury-prone 32-year-old. On his day, however, Matip remains one of the Premier League’s top defenders.

Forever underappreciated, he has been Van Dijk’s ideal sidekick for the previous five years. Virgil has been at his best when working with the man he described as “wonderful” at the close of last season.

As a result, there would be no scarcity of interest. Furthermore, having come on a free transfer in 2016, Liverpool would still stand to profit from Matip.

The other alternative is for Big Joel to stay and finish out his contract. As we’ve seen with Liverpool in recent years, this isn’t a situation they’re frightened of.

But look at where it has them. They have been dormant in the last several transfer windows due to a lack of revenue generated through player sales. This has cost them a lot of money. So, while it would be a big blow to see Matip depart the club, perhaps now is the moment. He would, however, require replacement.
