New students at the University of North Carolina are in for a special treat this fall, as they’ll get to hear from one of the most legendary athletes to ever wear Tar Heel blue.
When UNC announced the keynote speaker for the upcoming New Student Convocation, the excitement level soared. The honor will go to none other than Tyler Hansbrough — widely regarded as the greatest basketball player in UNC history.
Hansbrough will take the stage at the Dean Smith Center on August 17 for the one-hour event, part of the evening celebrations marking the start of the academic year. In the university’s official press release, the Tar Heel legend expressed his enthusiasm for the occasion:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my four years at Carolina as a student and am honored to help the chancellor and university kick off a new year by speaking at Convocation. The start of another school year is always an exciting time, especially for all the new students. It should be fun to once again spend time with a group of enthusiastic students at the Smith Center, a place where I shared many great memories with UNC fans.”
Hansbrough’s UNC career remains unmatched in ACC history. He is still the only player ever to earn four first-team All-America selections and four All-ACC honors. His 2,872 career points stand as the program’s all-time scoring record — a mark unlikely to be broken in an era when few players stay at one school for a full four years.
Given his remarkable journey, Hansbrough is uniquely positioned to share advice on making the most of the college experience. For the incoming Tar Heels, hearing from a figure of his stature will be a defining memory as they begin their own Carolina story.
