According to journalist Sami Mokbel, Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur is eager to stay at the team into the summer because he is eager to work with Ange Postecoglou.
Mokbel gave an update on Tottenham’s summer transfer market during his appearance yesterday on the Last Word on Spurs.
Last night, Spurs made James Maddison from Leicester City their third acquisition of the transfer window after making Dejan Kulusevski‘s loan move permanent and bringing in goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
After having a difficult defensive year in 2017, Tottenham is anticipated to turn their attention to their backline.
They have been widely connected with moves for players like Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven, but in the next weeks, they must cut a large team.
In his last campaign, Dier struggled since he committed several mistakes that resulted in goals.
After a strong start to the previous season and a call-up to the England team, the 29-year-old has struggled with his form.
Just last month, The Athletic claimed that Dier, who is nearing the conclusion of his deal with Spurs, may leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.
However, according to Mokbel, Dier is eager to remain and compete for a spot at Spurs under Postecoglou.
Dier is reluctant to leave.
Despite rumors that Dier would leave this summer, the journalist provided an update on his situation. According to Mokbel, Dier is likely to remain in North London.
“Centre-back is an area they definitely want to strengthen, 100 percent,” he stated. “On that note, I’d want to mention that this summer, there was a lot of speculation regarding Eric Dier quitting the team.
“From what I understand of that scenario, Eric Dier truly wants to stay and fight for his position. In fact, he anticipates working with Ange Postecoglou in the upcoming campaign.
Additionally, Mokbel thinks Postecoglou will gain from retaining players with experience like Dier around throughout his rookie season.
“Unless there’s a change of heart, I think we can expect him to stay,” he continued.
Due to several underwhelming performances while wearing a Tottenham jersey over the past year, Dier has drawn a lot of criticism.
But given that Postecoglou is trying to restructure his team, it makes sense for Spurs to stick onto him for another season.
Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga, for example, both have questionable futures at the club, and it is still unknown whether Spurs would make an effort to recruit Clement Lenglet on a long-term basis.
Even though Tottenham needs to enhance its center-back position, it appears improbable that they would do so this summer with the exception of Cristian Romero.
