Spurs may be about to outdo one of their worst transfers in recent memory.

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing close on Ange Postecoglou‘s first misstep as manager…
What is the latest on Clement Lenglet’s transfer to Tottenham?
According to Spanish publication Sport, the Lilywhites have finally negotiated personal terms with Clement Lenglet over his anticipated permanent return.

The Barcelona midfielder spent last season on loan in north London and, despite not making an impression, is available for just €10 million (£9 million). While this is a victory, securing a raise from his £200,000-per-week salary should have been more difficult than it appears to have been.
It is now up to the two clubs to come to an agreement on a fair sum that would enable the 28-year-old eventually leave the Catalan giants.

Should Tottenham sign Clement Lenglet on a long-term contract?
With a huge reputation and having temporarily relocated to England, this left-sided defender arrived in what many thought was an excellent acquisition for the club.
However, it was evident why Xavi was so prepared to let the France international leave the Camp Nou, with his performances in the English city being nothing short of terrible.
Despite making 26 league games, he only managed a 6.65 average Sofascore rating, ranking 20th on a Spurs team that lost out on European football. Looking back at his recent La Liga seasons, this should not have come as a surprise.

Prior to his arrival, he could only register a 6.67 average rating in the league, indicating that his continuous fall has been visible to all.
Journalist Jonathan Johnson attempted to outline it as well, writing on Twitter in 2021: “Lenglet. A defender’s whole and full responsibility.”
Despite this, Davinson Sanchez remained in the firing line for the most of the Spurs’ disastrous season. During one replacement, the Colombian was booed off the field, and he cut a very angry figure.
This was despite having a better average rating than Lenglet in the league of 6.87, and even outperforming him the previous year with a 7.08 average rating.

Although he was a high-priced signing in 2017, the investment in his potential was worthwhile at the time, even if he has yet to pay off. With 205 appearances for the club, the 27-year-old has at least returned some value from his move.

Signing Lenglet would be a massive mistake for Postecoglou, as he would just be repeating the same errors that have contributed to their loss in prominence.

The Australian must put the failings of the past behind him if he is to command a greater future for his new club, of which such signings should not be a part.
