Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has been ruled out of the European Under-21 Championship due to an injury.

The Reds’ centre-back will miss the Netherlands’ matches in Georgia and Romania due to a muscular injury. Van den Berg has had a terrible year, and this is yet another setback.

In May, the 21-year-old stated that his future would not be decided until after the European Under-21 Championship, which begins on Wednesday. He played in the Netherlands‘ Under-21 friendly against Japan this week, which ended in a scoreless tie. However, according to Nos, Van den Berg will now miss the competition due to injury, a “major loss.”

“I’m hoping to compete in the U21 European Championship this summer.” Only then will it be decided where I will play next season – as it has been in the last three years,” Van den Berg remarked last month.

It can be challenging and worrisome at times not knowing where I will be living in a few months. “If one day my home club Liverpool told me I could stay and get my caps, that would be great, but now I’m at Liverpool and I want the team to achieve our goal of remaining in the Bundesliga.” I’ll be back in Liverpool once the season ends to discuss the future.”

Shurandy Sambo, who played for Sparta Rotterdam last season, has been called up to replace Van den Berg.
